SMS payment system for farmers

myAgro is an innovative non-profit – and 2012 Echoing Green winner – that sells fertilizer and seed on layaway via an SMS platform and a network of local village vendors in Mali and Senegal. myAgro helps smallholder farmers build their business and rise from poverty.

Before myAgro, saving money to purchase quality seed and fertilizer was not possible for many farmers in Mali and Senegal. For most, the only way to access these crucial inputs is through credit, and as a result many end up burdened by loans and debt.

Using Telerivet from its founding, myAgro has created a system that enables farmers to save for the first time. Village vendors sell myAgro cards to farmers who then send a code over SMS to myAgro to credit their savings accounts. These savings are then used to purchase seed and fertilizer before planting season.
